Abstract

ABSTRACT
Introduction: The inadequacy of the number of Ophthalmologists in Black Africa is known. General practitioners are often the first to see the patient. In Brazzaville a high proportion of glaucomatous patients spend at least 2 years changing their glasses on the advice of the general practitioner before seeing the Ophthalmologist. Objective: To assess the level of knowledge of general practitioners on chronic open angle glaucoma (COAG). Materials and methods: Cross-sectional study conducted between January and March 2014 with 100 general practitioners in Brazzaville. They were recruited randomly, depending on their availability to answer in 30 minutes to 4 multiple choice questions on the COAG: definition, circumstances of discovery, duration of follow-up, interest or not of family screening. Each correct answer was worth 1 point. Knowledge of glaucoma was considered insufficient for a score lower than or equal to 2/4, average to 3/4, sufficient to 4/4. Results: 92% could not define the COAG, 88% did not know its circumstances of discovery, 90% did not know that the follow-up of the COAG is done for life. 84% did not know the value of family screening in case of COAG. 76% had a level of knowledge on COAG that was deemed insufficient. Conclusion: The general practitioner in Brazzaville has very limited knowledge on chronic open angle glaucoma.
