Congenital heart diseases (CHD) are the main human malformation and they are responsible of 3% of infant deaths worldwide. They remain underdiagnosed in Africa. Even though the diagnosis is easy and straightforward with the advent of cardiac ultrasound, CHD constitute a public health problem due to the increasing prevalence and low treatment rate. The aim of our study was to describe the echocardiographic profile of CHD in the newborns and infants in the city of Douala. Methods. We carried-out a retrospective cross-sectional and descriptive study of 1007 echocardiographic records over a ten year period (January 2008 to May 2018). We collected data on: age, sex, ante-natal history, symptoms and signs at presentation, and echocardiographic abnormalities. Based on the cardiac ultrasound, we grouped the CHD into three: left-to-right shunt, obstructive, and cyanotic. Results. Among the 1007 patients, 512 (50.8%) had CHD. The average age was 90 days. Heart murmur was heard in 59.2%, and left-to-right shunt was seen in 57.9%. Ventricular septal defect was the most frequent CHD (31.1%), and this was significantly higher in females. (38.5% vs 26.6%; p=0.007). In univariate analyses, the age of infants was significantly associated with CHD. (p<0.0001). In multivariate analyses, age (aOR 3.42, 95%CI 2.49- 4.70, p<0.0001), maternal infections (aOR 4.67 95%CI 1.24- 17.68, p=0.023), and maternal toxoplasmosis (aOR 11.11, 95%CI 1.30- 94.9, p=0.028) were significantly associated with CHD. Conclusion. Ventricular septal defect is the most frequent CHD. Early screening for maternal infections and cardiac auscultation at birth are efficient, low cost, and non-invasive in the prevention and early diagnoses of CHD.

RÉSUMÉ
Introduction. ER -
