Abstract

Introduction. The incidence of colorectal cancer is 8.5 cases per year. Obstructive colorectal cancer is a serious clinical form of the disease. The aim of this study was to investigate the epidemiological, clinical and therapeutic aspects of obstructive colorectal cancer in N’Djamena. Methodology. This was a retrospective, descriptive and analytical study conducted in the general surgery department of the National Reference University Hospital in N’Djamena, Chad, between June 2021 and May 2024. It included patients who underwent surgery for obstructive colorectal cancer during the study period. Results. Thirty patients were included, comprising 21 men (70%) and 9 women (30%). The mean age was 44.3 years (range: 18–75 years). Socio-economic status was classified as low in 73.3% of cases. The tumour was located in the left colon in 50% of cases, with a predominance in the sigmoid colon (36.7%). A Hartmann procedure (segmental colectomy with stoma) was performed in 36.7% of cases, followed by colostomy in 26.7% of cases. Adenocarcinoma was the only histological type found, diagnosed at stage IV in 40% of cases. Morbidity was 36.7% and mortality 20%. One-year survival was 47%, with a median survival of 9.8 months. Conclusion. Colorectal cancer presenting as an obstruction is a common clinical presentation, often serving as the first sign of cancer. Morbidity and mortality remain high, justifying early screening and appropriate management.
