Conclusion.
ABSTRACT
Objective. To report the visual experiences of patients during cataract surgery under peribulbar anesthesia. Patients and Methods. We have conducted a one month transversal study at the CHU-IOTA (Bamako). The patients concerned were adults operated on for cataract under peribulbar anesthesia without sedation. The patients were interviewed 1 to 4 hours after the operation about the visual sensations of the operated eye during the surgery. Results. 207 patients: 105 men and 102 women were selected. The mean age was 62.94 ± 12.5 years. Preoperative visual acuity ranged from 1/10 to light perception. 158 (76.3%) patients reported visual sensations during the surgery. These were light (reported by 76.3% of patients), colors (31.9%), instruments (22.7%), fingers of the surgeon (25.1%), water (27.1%) and unclear moves (19.8%). 38% among them were frightened by those visual sensations. Conclusion. More than three quarters of patients have visual experiences during the cataract surgery under peribulbar anesthesia. Some are frightened by these visual sensations.
