ABSTRACT
Usher syndrome is a combination of sensorineural hearing loss, which is usually congenital, and retinitis pigmentosa. We describe a family of 12 children of which 3 are affected. Three siblings of 12 presented with congenital deafness and retinopathy pigmentosa. The ophthalmologic workup showed a tubular visual field, the electroretinogram a and b waves were almost extinguished, color vision showed dyschromatopsia of the red-yellow axis. Auditory evoked potentials were flat. The clinical and paraclinical signs made it possible to confirm type 1 of Usher syndrome in the three patients. 20 to 30% of retinopathy pigmentosa cases are associated with non-ocular signs and constitute syndromes, the most common of which is Usher syndrome (18%).
