Conclusion.

ABSTRACT
Introduction. With about 94% of people living with HIV knowing their status, Cameroon has a great success rate in screening overall. However, programmatic data show that some population targets are poorly covered by this intervention. Self-screening is an alternative strategy recommended by the WHO to target hard-to-reach populations. In Yaoundé, this study explored the acceptability, the profile of participants accepting the HIV self-test and the motivations related to its use. Methodology. This was a cross-sectional and descriptive study conducted in Yaoundé from January 27 to March 31, 2018 in two main phases among Men Who Have Sex with Men (MSM) and sex workers (SWs): a phase of distribution of self-testing kits in the drop-in center and local distribution, and a phase of post-test evaluation. Results. A total of 601 MSMs and 870 SWs were recruited for self-testing, of which 549 (91.3%) MSMs and 650 (74.7%) SWs were considered eligible for the study. The uptake of self-testing was 90% (495/549) MSM and 87% (568/650) SW. Overall, 67 (13.6%) MSM and 108 (19.2%) SW had been tested for HIV more than 12 months previously or never before. The most frequently reported reason for taking a self-test was the desire to know HIV status (MSM: 38%; SW: 26%). Only 3% of participants mentioned the benefit of confidentiality. Conclusion. HIV self-testing has been accepted by the SW and MSM populations in Yaoundé. The main reason was more the convenience and availability in this often hidden environment rather than confidentiality.
ER -
