Abstract
ABSTRACT
Schizencephaly is a rare malformation of cortical development resulting from cell migration defects that occur unilaterally or bilaterally. Schizencephaly can be open or closed. An MRI sequence called HASTE allows diagnosis in the prenatal period. Established aetiologies include in-utero infections, young maternal age, drug and substance abuse. The clinic is dominated by motor impairment, mild mental retardation and seizures. We report the observation of a 42-year-old patient with epilepsy in relation to unilateral open cleft schizencephaly.
