Abstract Textiloma refers to the involuntary retention of a gauze or drape in the surgical site. Although infrequent, the diagnostic challenge and the economic and psychologic impact of textilome make it a disease whose clinical forms and therapeutic options should be known of every surgeon and the prevention strategies revisited. We report the case of a 40-year-old woman, operated 20 years before for acute appendicitis who was admitted for bowel occlusion and abdominal mass. Laparotomy found a large compress encapsulated in a thick, fibrous envelope. The extraction was complicated by a loop perforation for which a resection and anastomosis was performed. The postoperative course was uneventful.Downloads
