RÉSUMÉ
Introduction. Conclusion.
ABSTRACT
Introduction. Diabetes is one of the leading causes of morbidity, mortality and disability worldwide, with many serious complications, most of which are cardiovascular. Among these complications, the diabetic foot is the leading cause of amputation worldwide. The objective of this study was to identify the knowledge, attitudes and practices of diabetics regarding diabetic foot prevention. Methods. This was a cross-sectional study conducted from July to November 2019 at the diabetes and hypertension management unit of the Ngaoundéré Regional Hospital. Diabetics followed in this unit during the study period and who had submitted written informed consent were included. Newly detected patients were excluded. Socio-demographic and clinical data were collected using a structured, pre-tested questionnaire. Patients were recruited on a consecutive sampling basis at their follow-up visits. Results. A total of 250 patients were included in the study. Among them, 153 (61.11%) knew that diabetes is a chronic disease, 205 (82.0%) knew that it leads to limb amputations and 125 (50%) used to check the integrity of their feet themselves. Conclusion. Patient attitudes and practices regarding the prevention of foot injuries in diabetes remain inadequate in our environment and need to be improved.
