Abstract

PURPOSE

To report radiographic findings in upper and lower limb injuries of children at Yaounde

 METHODS

This was a cross sectional descriptive study performed in the radiological and emergency units of the University Teaching Hospital and Central Hospital of Yaoundé. One hundred children who performed x-ray because of trauma were recruited. All the pictures were reviewed by two radiologists. Lesions were grouped according the Salter Harris/ Ogden classification. Age, sex, etiology and associated findings were also collected.

 RESULTS

There were 66 boys and 34 girls. The mean age was 11 years 6 months. Road traffic accident was the cause of the trauma in 62% of cases. The upper limb was affected in 69% of cases and the lower limb in 29% of cases. Most fractures were closed with no or little displacement. According to the Salter Harris classification, 70% were type II, 12% type IV, 7% type III, 6% type I  and 1% type V. Six children had associated lesions that were detected with ultrasound.

 CONCLUSION

Metaphyso epiphyseal traumatic lesions affect mainly the boys. Road traffic accident is the main etiology, followed by sports trauma. Most lesions are type 2 Salter Harris. Combination of standard X-ray and ultrasound permit proper management
