Abstract

Introduction. Bullet injuries are a real public health issue in Mali and their frequency is increasing in our country. The aim of our study was to describe the occurring circumstances as well as the lesions and the patients’ management. Methods. This was a cross sectional descriptive and retrospective study that was carried on at Hopital Sominé of Mopti; It covered the period from January 2015 to December 2017 (3 years) and concerned on 44 patients. Results. The series included 42 men and 2 women. Their average age was 30 years (range: 8 - 60 years). Farmers (19 cases) and military (11 cases) were mostly affected. The maximum time delay before admission was 26.4 hours. The most common circumstances were attacks (26 cases) and manipulation of guns accident (10 cases). The most used weapons were: war weapons were used in 23 cases and pistol in 11 cases. The injury concerned the chest in 20 cases and pelvic limbs in 10 cases. There were 22 soft tissue wounds and 19 fractures cases (all of them open fractures). The average duration of treatment was 30.9 hours. In emergency, we cleaned the wound in 24 cases and used external fixatives in nine cases. As far as complications are concerned, there were eight infections and two bilateral blinded eyes. The outcome was a favorable in 37 cases and 3 patients died. Conclusion. Firearms wounds concern armed forces as well as civilian population. They should be prevented by the respect of security rules in conflict areas.
