Abstract

ABSTRACT
AIM. Benefits of routine ultrasonography during pregnancy are well known. Since it was introduced in Cameroon thirty years ago, data on health care providers knowledge has never been reported. The aim of this study was to analyze the health care providers knowledge on the prescription of routine ultrasonography during pregnancy.
METHODS. This was a cross sectional descriptive study based on a questionnaire filled by the antenatal care providers working in Yaoundé, Cameroon.
RESULTS. sixty-six providers filling the inclusion criteria were included. 29(42.4%) were obstetricians. The number of exams systematically prescribed varied from 1 to 6, with a mean of 2.97 ± 0.58. If for most of the health care providers, the 1st ultrasonography was required for diagnosis and age determination of the pregnancy, 59.1% of them wrongly prescribed it between the 8th and the 10th week of pregnancy. 62.1% of responders adequately prescribed the morphological ultrasonography between the 20th and the 25th week of pregnancy. For the 3rd term of pregnancy, the ultrasonography was prescribed by 98.5% of health care providers, mainly 75.4% of them to assess fetal growth.
CONCLUSION. Even though routine ultrasonography for antenatal care is known by all the health care providers included in the study, wrong knowledge and prescription habits were identified. It is, therefore, recommended to harmonize the usage of routine ultrasonography for antenatal care in our setting, and specifically train the health care providers involved in its prescription.

CONCLUSION.
