Abstract

Introduction. Total hip arthroplasty, a common procedure in developed countries is of limited practice in African countries like Benin, mainly because of the lack of financial means of the patients who bear all the costs of this intervention. The objective of this study was to evaluate the outcomes of total hip arthroplasty in a context of limited resources. Materials and Methods. The postoperative radiographic data of 46 primary total hip arthroplasties performed at the Hubert Koutoukou Maga National Hospital and University Center (CNHU-HKM) in Cotonou between January 2010 and December 2019 as well as the clinical evaluation of 18 patients reviewed were been analyzed. Results. The mean age was 43.93 years. Males represented 54.6% (n=24) or a sex ratio of 1.2. The mean postoperative cup inclination was 40.52°. The femoral stem was in neutral position in 28 cases. The average time to walking with canes was 5.9 days and limb length was restored in 7 cases. The postoperative PMA score showed an average improvement of 3.9 points. The inclination of most of the cups in our series was in the Lewinnek "safe zone". The expected improvement of the PMA score is confirmed in our series. Return to work was one of the advantages of arthroplasty in all our patients. Conclusion. Total hip arthroplasty at CNHU-HKM in Cotonou gives encouraging results in view of our working conditions.
